Mike Brown

Spokane, WA

Mike Brown was raised in southern Colorado in the high mountain valley named the San Luis Valley. Mike grew up showing cattle and hogs and was very competitive growing up. Beginning at the age of 16, Mike began putting on clinics for showmanship and fitting. After college he went on to show for certain ranches and worked for production operations showing cattle and fitting. Mike has always been a found supporter of 4-H and FFA programs, constantly advocating that they are the two greatest youth organizations in the world. Mike has served for over 25 years as a leader in 4-H. The area where he has volunteered the most has been with livestock judging. He began coaching in his mid- 20’s in Colorado and picked it up when he moved to Spokane. In his time, he has seen many youth have success with judging, some earning scholarships. Mike is a firm believer that livestock judging is the foundation of a youth’s career in showing livestock. Mike specializes in cattle, but also sorts other species including hogs, sheep and goats. Over the years Mike has judged various shows and jackpots. His philosophy is finding good livestock that are functional and meet the ideal of today. Additionally, he believes that livestock needs to meet the other necessity, they need to produce a carcass for the consumer. Some of the recent shows Mike has judged in the Pacific Northwest has been the Spokane Interstate, the open cattle, the North Idaho State Fair, the Latah County Fair in Moscow, ID, and numerous other County Fairs. He has judged other shows like the Kootenai Classic and the Lincoln County Preview.

Ask anyone who knows me well, and they’ll agree that I am passionate about livestock and working with young people. So naturally, my days in the center of the ring are some of my favorite! I value giving each exhibitor feedback during showmanship, because I understand its important in the learning process due to my background in teaching. I aim to stay current on livestock trends, without compromising on fundamentals. I am thorough, punctual, and professional. After judging for Linn-Benton Community College, I went on to get my degree in elementary education. I am currently a first grade teacher, and prefer judging shows on school breaks or during the summer. I've enjoyed success as a livestock judging coach as well, and have had multiple state champion teams who went on to be top 10 at FFA nationals, and Arizona Nationals. I continue to dabble in showpigs and other livestock on my farm; and have judged many county fairs and jackpots in the PNW. I am easiest to contact by text.
